Production on the penultimate instalment of the Divergent series is officially underway, Lionsgate have announced this week.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1, the first part of the final book in Veronica Roth‘s best-selling young adult dystopian trilogy of novels, is currently being filmed in Atlanta.
The adaptation of the second novel, Insurgent, was released earlier this year, seeing Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) continue their fight against a powerful alliance which threatened to tear their society apart. Allegiant follows on to find the two escaping beyond the Wall to finally discover the shocking truth of what lies behind it.
As the popular – money making – thing to do at the minute, the adaptation of Allegiant is also being split into two parts, although Allegiant – Part 1 and Allegiant – Part 2 are being shot separately.
Whilst Insurgent didn’t have a whole lot going on in terms of plot and revelations, director Robert Schwentke did a good enough job of adapting it. With a lot more going on in the final novel, Schwentke returns to direct, and with a more action-packed story to work with, he’s sure to do the finale justice.
Noah Oppenheim, Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower writer/director Stephen Chbosky are also credited as screenwriters.
With returning cast members including Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jonny Weston, Mekhi Phifer, and Daniel Dae Kim, new cast additions include Jeff Daniels as the morally ambiguous David, with Bill Skarsgård and Nadia Hilker filling the roles of Matthew and Nita respectively.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1 is set to be release on 18th March, 2016, followed by Allegiant – Part 2 on 24th March, 2017.
